What AI Dungeon is

AI Dungeon is the original AI text-adventure game — the one that showed a whole generation of players what happens when you hand the plot to an AI and say *"do anything."* You type what your character says or does, and the AI writes back what the world, the other characters and your partner in crime do next. No rules, no objective: fantasy quests, sci-fi, horror, crime drama or a slow-burn romance that turns very explicit once you flip the right setting. Pick from thousands of community-made scenarios or write your own world, characters and locations with story cards, and the AI fills in the rest. It's made by Latitude and plays in the browser or in the app.

What makes it relevant here: AI Dungeon has a Mature AI safety level that, once you confirm you're 18+, stops limiting mature content. Community scenarios are rated, and explicit ones fall under Unrated (18+), which the default search filter hides until you change it yourself — so adults get the steamy stuff, and it stays behind a switch. Settings start on Safe by default.

Do, Say or Story: what does your input control?

The three inputs give your text different roles. Choose the one that matches what you want to add to the scene:

• Do: a character action. “Open the sealed envelope.” proposes an action for the AI to respond to. This mode usually reformats the input with “You”; the Third Person component can use the character’s name instead.
• Say: a line of dialogue. “Who sent this letter?” becomes speech attributed to your character, with quotation marks. Do can combine dialogue with a movement when you need both.
• Story: direct narration. “At dawn, the theatre is empty except for a red notebook.” enters the story without an automatic “You” prefix. Use it to establish a fact or change perspective; keep the grammatical person consistent to avoid an accidental shift.

Story Cards: put details in the field the AI receives

Entry contains the information sent to the AI. Name identifies the card in the interface; the AI does not read Notes. Include the character’s name in Entry rather than leaving it only in the title.

Our original example: Name “Renée”; Entry “Renée is a 46-year-old bookbinder. She carries a red notebook and refuses to enter the theatre alone.”; Trigger “Renée”. A trigger can occur in your input or the AI’s response. When it first occurs during a response, the card informs the next generation. See the official Story Cards documentation.

When a detail goes missing, open View Context from the latest response. Check whether the card was included before expanding its description. Broad triggers activate unrelated cards; long entries compete with recent story text. The context-management guide, consulted on November 1, 2026, explains that check. Pricing: free to start, pay for memory

The free plan is genuinely playable, and Journey at $14.99 is the sweet spot for most players (8k context, 760 credits). Heavy roleplayers will feel the jump to Legend at $29.99 (16k context).
