What SillyTavern is

SillyTavern is the power-user's roleplay machine: a free, open-source, locally installed interface for chatting with AI characters through whatever language model you want. It isn't a chatbot service — it's the cockpit. You plug in a backend (a model running on your own GPU, a cloud API, or the free volunteer network AI Horde) and SillyTavern gives you character cards, lore books, group chats, personas, image generation and voices on top.

How it works

Install Node.js, clone or download SillyTavern, start the server and open it in your browser. Then pick your brain: AI Horde for zero setup, a local model through KoboldCpp or Tabby if your GPU can take it, or an API key from an OpenAI-compatible provider. Load a character card — or write one: description, personality, first message, example dialogue — and start the scene.

Where it beats any hosted app: memory and control. World Info injects lore only when keywords come up, so a long campaign keeps its facts straight. Group chats let you run a threesome or a whole cast in one room. Personas tell the bot who you are. Generation presets let you tune creativity and length. And SillyTavern itself doesn't filter anything — how filthy it gets depends only on the model you plug in and that provider's rules. Run a local uncensored model and nothing leaves your machine.

Pricing

SillyTavern costs nothing. Your only possible bill is the backend: zero if you use AI Horde or your own GPU, pay-as-you-go if you connect a commercial API. That makes it the cheapest serious NSFW roleplay setup on the market — if you're willing to do the setup.
